As soon as we talk about spirituality and health, it is understood that we are talking about peace of the soul and body health.  Even in the Western world, when we hear about spirituality and health, there is often talk of yoga, meditation and other such activities which give peace to the mind.  It cannot be denied that inner peace is the result of spirituality.  When the mind is at peace, diseases also stay away and even if any disease occurs, the body fights that disease well.

Introduction:

 Yoga, meditation and other such activities give peace to the mind, but this is not spirituality. In reality, spirituality is the inner cleanliness of the soul, recognition of Allah, understanding of wisdom, development of good morals, increase in good deeds and there is self-improvement. This is such a long journey invisible to the eyes in which you gradually get closer to Allah. In this journey one has to face severe difficulties because one’s desires. You have to continuously fight and subdue the strong attacks of your nafs till your last breath.  The better you try, the more you will achieve spirituality and find peace.

The Mind-Body Connection:

The mind-body connection is often explored in the context spirituality and health, emphasizing holistic well-being. Many traditions believe that nurturing the mind-body connection contributes to spiritual growth and a sense of inner balance. There is a saying that a healthy mind resides in a healthy body, that is why spirituality is very important to maintain a balance between body and mind. This strengthens our immune system which fights diseases well.

 Spirituality can be a tremendous source of comfort during difficult times that is crisis. Imam Ghazali Rahmatullah Alaih, the renowned Islamic scholar, philosopher and mystic, has aptly pointed out that one of the primary contributors to diseases is following one’s nafs, or desires. It’s as though the nafs acts as a catalyst, exacerbating already existing ailments. 

  To illustrate Spirituality and health here, consider a man who has been advised by his doctor to consume less salt due to his high blood pressure. However, instead of heeding the physician’s counsel, the man indulges his craving for salt and ends up aggravating his disease. Clearly, this example serves as a reminder that good health and disease prevention requires a concerted effort on multiple fronts, including following one’s healthcare provider’s advice and embracing spirituality.
